Christian Wall Art for the Living Room

Pieces that make your living room warmer, and mean something when someone asks. The wall above the sofa is the one everyone faces, the one behind the family photos, the one your children will remember as home. Christian wall art for living room walls should hold that wall for years and still say something true. A sea at night with one man walking across it does. So does a face that meets your eye from across the room.

Above the Waves is the one to start with, a wide horizon that reads as a seascape until you look closer. In His Presence is for the mantel. Carried by Grace is for a family room where children play under it. Reaching Through the Water is for the wall people sit facing. Safe in His Care is for a living room with warm light and a soft rug.

How large should Christian wall art for living room walls be?

The rule of thumb for a sofa wall is simple. Art above a sofa should span about two-thirds of the sofa's width, and its center should sit 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above a standard 84-inch sofa that means a single 30x40, or two 20x30s or 24x36s hung a few inches apart.

In practice, a three-seat sofa at 84 inches wants about 56 inches of art across; a loveseat at 60 wants about 40. Our canvases are all vertical, so you have two honest ways to get there. One large piece, a 30x40 or 24x36, centered above the sofa with bare wall on either side, works when the room is calm and the painting is strong enough to carry the wall alone. Above the Waves and Reaching Through the Water are both strong enough. A pair is the other route: two 24x36s about four inches apart cover 52 inches, two 20x30s cover 44. Above the Waves and Reaching Through the Water make a natural pair, because they are two moments from the same night in Matthew 14.

Hang the bottom edge six to ten inches above the back of the sofa, and let the center land near 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

Which scenes suit a room where people gather?

The living room is a public room, so choose a scene that welcomes. Above the Waves is the most natural fit: a wide horizon, dark water, Jesus walking toward the boat, and enough calm in the composition that it reads as a seascape first. In His Presence, the portrait, is a bolder choice for a living room and a good one above a mantel, where a single face at eye level anchors the room. Carried by Grace is gentle and suits a family room with children. Reaching Through the Water is dramatic and does best where people sit facing it, above the sofa itself. Safe in His Care is the softest of the five, and it comes into its own in a living room with warm light and a soft rug.

Are these canvas prints or originals?

Canvas prints of our own artwork, made to order. Each scene is our own artwork; the canvas you receive is printed on matte cotton-polyester canvas over a pine stretcher, either frameless or in a natural or black pine frame, with hanging hardware included. Large wall art for the living room is where the painterly surface matters most, because at 30x40 the texture reads from the sofa.

The canvas itself

The prints are made to order in the US on matte canvas, frameless from $59 or in a natural or black pine frame from $129. Hanging hardware is included.

Frequently asked

Framed or frameless above a sofa?

Frameless reads as more casual and suits modern, neutral rooms. A natural pine frame warms the picture and pairs with wood floors and linen upholstery. Black pine gives a crisper edge and suits darker walls or a room with other black-framed pictures. In a living room, the frame usually earns its place.

Is one large piece enough for a sofa wall?

Yes, and for a sofa wall it is often the better choice. A single 30x40 with generous space around it is calm and easy to get right, and it gives the room one thing to look at. If you want more than one, a matched pair looks intentional and is simple to hang level.

How high should the painting hang?

Center it 57 to 60 inches from the floor, the height most galleries use. Above a sofa, let the six-to-ten-inch gap above the backrest set the position, even if the center ends up a little higher. Keep every piece in the room on the same logic.

Which painting works above a fireplace?

In His Presence, the portrait of Jesus, is the one for a mantel. A single face at eye level suits the symmetry of a fireplace. Match the width of the canvas to roughly two-thirds of the firebox opening or the mantel shelf, whichever the room reads as the anchor.

Reaching Through the Water is an original Mercy & Light painting of Jesus reaching into the water, inspired by Matthew 14:30–31.
