Contemporary Christian Art

Faith on the wall, in colors that fit the home you have today. Sea green, warm sand, soft grey: these paintings sit as easily beside linen and oak as anything from a design store, and a guest sees a long horizon before they see the figure walking on it. Contemporary Christian art for the living room you already love.

Above the Waves is for the modern living room. In His Presence is for a console or a mantel where a single face can hold the room. Carried by Grace is for the quiet bedroom. Safe in His Care is for a nursery in soft colors. Reaching Through the Water is for the person who wants the drama.

What does contemporary Christian art look like now?

In this collection it looks like paint. The paintings are figurative, so you can see what is happening: a boat, a hand, a shepherd, a shoreline. They are painterly, so you can see how they were made, the strokes open and loose up close, settling into water and wool from across the room. And they are restrained in color, sea green, sand and grey, so they belong in the rooms people live in today, beside the sofa you already own and the lamp you chose last spring.

The scenes are the old ones, told plainly. Above the Waves could hang in a Scandinavian living room, a long horizon with one small figure. In His Presence, a portrait of Jesus with a steady gaze, works above a modern console as well as a mantel. Safe in His Care brings the Good Shepherd into a nursery in soft colors. The stories have been carried for two thousand years; these were painted for the house you live in now.

Can modern paintings of Jesus fit a neutral home?

Yes, if the palette is right and the scale is honest. A 12x16 canvas of Jesus on a large white wall looks like an afterthought. A 24x36 or 30x40 of the same painting looks like a decision. Pick the size for the wall, and let the soft colors do the work of fitting in.

Frameless suits the most minimal rooms; the image wraps the edge and there is no hard line. A natural pine frame is the choice for warm neutrals, wood floors and rattan. Black pine is for high-contrast rooms, dark walls or a grouping of other black-framed pictures.

Are these Christian contemporary artworks originals or prints?

Canvas prints of our own artwork. Each scene is our own artwork, printed to order on matte cotton-polyester canvas, stretched over pine, frameless or framed. You get the texture and color of the artwork at the size you choose, with hanging hardware included, ready for the wall.

The canvas itself

Each print is made to order in the US on matte canvas over a pine stretcher, frameless from $59 or framed from $129, in six sizes from 8x12 to 30x40 inches. Hanging hardware is included.

Frequently asked

Is contemporary Christian art the same as minimalist Christian art?

They overlap. Minimalist is one way of being contemporary, a spare room and a quiet palette. These paintings are contemporary in palette and hand, and full in subject, a whole scene with weather and figures. They sit well in a minimalist room and give it something to look at.

Do the canvases have any text on them?

No. The canvas carries the painting alone. The passage each scene comes from is given on the product page, so the meaning is there when you want it and the wall stays quiet.

What sizes work as a focal piece in a modern room?

24x36 and 30x40. Above a sofa, aim for about two-thirds of the sofa's width; a 30x40 or a pair of 20x30s usually gets there. Center the piece 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

Which painting is the most modern in feel?

Above the Waves, with its long horizon, dark water and a small figure of Jesus against the sea, reads most like a contemporary landscape. Carried by Grace, a shoreline with two figures, is close behind. In His Presence is the most traditional subject, a portrait, painted in a modern hand.

Reaching Through the Water is an original Mercy & Light painting of Jesus reaching into the water, inspired by Matthew 14:30–31.
